The SQ5 ticks many, many boxes. The diesel engine provides quick but also effortless performance along with sensible fuel economy, and sounds pretty tasty, too. The handling is beautifully judged -if not quite as entertaining as that of the Porsche Macan - while still giving you a comfortable ride. And it's a practical large SUV for those with a family.

Judging by this, Audi has made the right decision in going for diesel. It's clean and efficient in this context, and delivers decent efficiency. More broadly, it also suits the idea of a rapid, relatively subtle sub-brand for the RS models, and delivers on a more accessible kind of performance. The SQ5 won't have you nipping out for a drive just for the hell of it, but you won't be disappointed when you do. It's a good size for a myriad of duties, and the extra speed makes it just a little bit fun when the opportunity arises. A solid effort.

As a facelift, we'd call the 2021 SQ5 a success as it looks more dramatic, drives better, and delivers more performance. However, the Q5 underpinnings still lack the sporty character found in some of the SQ5's rivals, keeping it from being our favorite. Both the BMW X3 M40i and Mercedes-AMG GLC43 will outperform it and deliver more fun in the process. However, the Audi excels in comfort, so perhaps it can carve out a niche with buyers that want speed without a jarring ride.

On the road, however, the SQ5 feels closer to a hot hatch than a hot SUV. The low body roll and great traction make handling on tight corners a breeze. On a trip to Latigo Canyon in Malibu, which is a serpentine road that snakes up the mountain range, the SQ5 didn't hesitate once despite the steep climbs and altitude.
