Despite its extra oomph, the SQ5 is actually underpowered when compared to rivals such as the BMW X3 M, the Porsche Macan Turbo, and the Mercedes-AMG GLC-class. Neither is the SQ5 as crisp and athletic on a twisty road as those powerhouses. The silver lining is that the Audi offers more ride comfort, which may appeal to buyers who prefer comfort over maximum cornering grip.

Judging by this, Audi has made the right decision in going for diesel. It's clean and efficient in this context, and delivers decent efficiency. More broadly, it also suits the idea of a rapid, relatively subtle sub-brand for the RS models, and delivers on a more accessible kind of performance. The SQ5 won't have you nipping out for a drive just for the hell of it, but you won't be disappointed when you do. It's a good size for a myriad of duties, and the extra speed makes it just a little bit fun when the opportunity arises. A solid effort.

Buying a family car doesn't have to feel like giving up, according to the refreshed 2021 Audi SQ5. The updated compact luxury SUV seems to come with an insistence that a practical family choice can still be fun and it attempts to prove that with an S badge, four tailpipes, and suspension upgrades.

On the road, however, the SQ5 feels closer to a hot hatch than a hot SUV. The low body roll and great traction make handling on tight corners a breeze. On a trip to Latigo Canyon in Malibu, which is a serpentine road that snakes up the mountain range, the SQ5 didn't hesitate once despite the steep climbs and altitude.
