Plug-in hybrids are at their best when it feels like multiple propulsion technologies are enabling a better vehicle, rather than just hampering each other with complexity; and with some time driving the Q5 plug-in hybrid earlier this month, I can say that's for the most part what this version of the bestselling Q5 delivers. At present, Audi is the only one of the German automakers-outside of its VW Group cousin, Porsche-that's making a genuine effort to establish a clear connection in the interface between its plug-in hybrids and its fully electric models.
Even if you ignore these matters of pragmatism, the Q5 55 TFSI e is one heck of a car. It's seriously swift when you want it to be, and a hushed round-town cruiser when you don't. Like pretty much every other Audi, it has that impressive feeling of high quality inside. It's able to turn heads, if not quite stop people dead in their tracks. I've genuinely lost count of the number of compliments I've had about both the car, and its Azores Green paintwork.

It's pretty hard to tell the difference between Audi's PHEVs and its non-electrified models. There are some slight adjustments to the bumpers, but not in a way that would stand out to anyone but the most ardent Audiphile. That is, of course, except for the big ol' charging port cover on the side, but it looks just like a gas flap.
